Layback

The Layback was and is my all time favorite move. I used to look at pictures in Skateboarder mag and see guys doing a layback in a pool. The layback is a hard move to do, your body and balance tell you to put down your inside arm, but the move requires the outside. It is all about style.

This was me back in 1984 trying to be all about "Style"

1980's

I was going through some old pictures and found these...

This is VR. How about that 80's wetsuit? Nice Al Merrick with the original Astrodeck!

OK. Yes, this is me, circa 1986. That is a 6'-0" Cyclone Surfboards from Ventura. This was Jeff Bushman's label when he started to shape. He ended up moving to the North Shore to shape.

How about this geek? Yes, me again on the day of High School Graduation. This is June, 1984.
I am holding my first custom board, a 5'-10" Spindrift From Santa Barbara. Shaped by Rich Reed. I wish I had this one still and the Cyclone.

SUP's

So, I got this good friend of mine, all around good guy. I could always count on him for a DawnPatrol. I mean, I would say " Be at my house at 4;30am" and he would be walking up my alley at 4:25am. Just a good dude. We meet paddleboarding, and have been good friends ever since, even found out his wife and I are semi related. (Story for another post)

Well, a few years back he gets Glaucoma in one of his eyes. Tries some medication for awhile, but that did not work to well . So he needed to have surgery to fix it before it got worse. If it did get worse, he would be blind in that eye. Well, the down side to the surgery is he could no longer surf!..... Just take a second and ponder that.......You could NO LONGER SURF!

Some of you might call B.S. Well the thing with the surgery is, they have to put something similar to a valve in your eye to relieve the pressure. Only problem is, stuff could get in it, and your eye could get infected. Hence the no Surfing. Since we all know how clean the water is in Southern California.

What would you do?

He loves the ocean, loves to surf and paddleboard. So he gets into SUP'ing. Yes, Oarons, Ocean Sweepers, Janitors, etc....But, I cut him some slack, and I am stoked he is back doing something on the the water. He is not out in the lineups, doesn't want to risk infections. He just wants to be in the ocean, Or, in his case, on the ocean!

I guess all I am Saying is .............that SUPS are ok for the right people!

Sunset - circa 1984

I found these pictures of Sunset Point. This was the closest place I could get to when I was just starting out. If you look real hard, you can see me with the Yellow Board. That is a 7' Bruce Jones Single fin. I still have that board.

Sunset has changed alot since 1983, for one, you could pull up anytime and get a parking spot.

Look at all that sand too....

Also, there was now worry about Great Whites or SUPs.
