Since Ian and his wife are involved with the company, I asked if Ian could sign my Bronzed Aussies Surfboard. It was such an honor to meet Ian and have him sign this. The Bronzed Aussies started professionalism and marketing of the pro surfing with the formation of the Bronzed Aussies. See the Story of them here on surfline (Bronzed Aussies)

Anyways, I had to head up to Oxnard this morning. I knew the swell was good, so I went straight to Secos.

It felt real good to get in the water, the kelp was real thick. As I was sitting on my board, i see this guy paddle back out, he looked very familiar. I realized it was Tony Alva!

After I came in I grabbed my camera to get some picks of TA, enjoy!
Surf Stories--- You Should have Been Here an Hour Ago!

Way back when, there was a one page story in Surfer or Surfing. It included a small excerpt from Phil Edwards’s book from 1967.

For some reason, that one page little story stuck with me. I never forgot the name of the book. I made it a mission to find it. It was kind of like looking for the Holy Grail of Surf books.

I looked for this book every place I went, every used book store from San Diego to San Luis Obispo. Remember, this was before the “internet”. You actually had to search for stuff and have some luck.

In the Early 90’s, things changed, Longboarding was the rage, along with collecting boards. My girlfriend (future wife) and I went to the Longboard Grotto in Luecadia one day. As I was looking around, there it was in all its Glory after all these years. A mint, first edition. Keep in mind, I had never actually seen or held one before. I asked it I could see it, I was literally was pissing my pants. Then, I saw he price. I said thanks, but I will keep Looking.

I forgot about. Christmas came and my Girlfriend, said she had one last gift for me. She handed me a box. I peeled off the paper and opened the box, and there was the book. I mean THE BOOK! (this girl became my wife by the way).

At that time I was living in Newport and she lived in San Diego. I knew where Phil Edwards lived, but not the exact location. Somehow through research, I got his phone number. I called him up, told him who I was and asked if I could mail him my book to sign. He said yes! I was stoked, this was Phil Edwards!

Well I decided instead of mailing the book to him, I would drop it off at his house when I was son my way to San Diego. I stopped by and left it on his porch with a note and a phone number. He called me the next morning to say that he had my book and that he would sign it and wanted to know where to mail it too, I asked if I could pick it up and he said sure. I asked if we could swing by the next morning and he agreed. I was now literally freaking out! I had the Holy Grail and was actually going to meet the man himself.

We drove up in the morning. When we pulled up in front of his house, I was shaking. I remember walking up to his front door. Phil Edwards Front Door! I rang the doorbell and his wife came to the door and invited us in. (I was in Phil Edwards House!). Then Phil came in the room. This is the first guy to ever Ride Pipeline, Phil Edwards, and I am in his living room! We talked, he commented on how that was the best copy of the book he had seen, and then asked me to come back to this other room to see some things he was working on. Phil Edwards!

He talked and shared some things. He included a pictured and signed it. I thanked him for his time and we left. Phil Edwards! I just meet Phil Edwards! I was in his House!

This was one day that I felt Like a grom, I will never forget it.
This could not be more true of the Catalina Classic. It starts on Catalina and ends at the Manhattan Beach Pier, 32 miles!
A mutual friend, Chuck Camps just did his first Classic, it might be his only, but he did it. He made the cut off at the R10 bouy with 5 minutes to spare. He did not come in first, but he finished! Way to Go Chuck!

We got there early. Just as we pulled into the parking lot, Brett Simpson was unloading, Cole went over and got his shirt signed and a picture with Brett.
Next we got down to the sand, got a photo with the Brazzo,Miguel Pupo. Then Timmy Reyes, Tanner Gudauskas, Kai Otten, Dane Reynolds and then Kelly Slater!
In all seriousness, I think the real Grom was me.

So I recently got a GoPro to film my sun as he laerns to surf. I mounted in on the top of his Wavestorm and we went down and tried it out. After he was done, I had to paddle out on his board. This isa a little clip.

How true.
I took some old wetsuits to M&B Wetsuits in Lakewood and had them altered for summer. I had the sleeves cut off. Now I have a 3/2 short sleeve, 2mm shorter sleeve and a repaired Ripcurl 3/2. These suits have a new lease on life. Speaking of Life, I stepped one year closer to the 50; I made it to 46 on Saturday. So, to Celebrate
, I went to see DEVO at the Observatory in OC on Sunday night. What a great show as always. I have seen them a few times in the past few years, true, they are a little older, but they kicked ass as usual.
I also got out and surfed the closest place to my house last week, Seal River Jetty. I was fun, I actually caught a shoulder/ head high on from the middle river all the way to Crabs. A good time for sure. I think I will hit it tomorrow.
Here is to a injury free 46.

The family and I went to the Big Island for Spring break. I got to do a lot of snorkeling with my son, and we went fishing, but no catching.
I made some time to finally meet Tim Orr, the Bonzer affciaonado. Tim is a great guy and has a amazing collection of Bonzers, I think he actually has the 5th board the Campbell brothers actually made.
I did get in a surf after I got back. All the injuries are finally healed, and I hope to get back in the water more.

So I thought I would ask Ned about his first time going to Trestles.

Ned,

I want to do a semi interview of your first time impressions of Trestles.Give me a quick back ground about when you started surfing and why?
I started surfing about 20yrs ago because at that time I just moved from Montana and wanted to try it.

What do you think of the over place( environment, etc)?I like the area around trestles because of the fantastic view of the ocean.

How did you like the walk? The walk was very cool. Seemed to be the way surfers use to do it years ago before parking lots etc.

Was this your first time surfing over cobblestones?First time over cobblestone. Glad I brought my booties. Had some issues walking out with the swell so I just decided to paddle out.

How was the wave? The waves were steep but make able. Figured it out after a few waves on the head.

Would you go back?
Would go back but need to be bettered prepared. Bike with surfboard rack etc.

Would you relocate to the area to surf there if you could?
Yes. If I could live closer yes. 45 min drive for me is not bad. However weekends I would not go.

How does this compare to your usual spot?My local spots is HB cliffs or Bolsa because of the showers. Trestles is much better but can't surf there before work. My locals spots are much more convenient.

As you can tell by the picture, he picked a great day to go.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4923982138259252371.post-10180045226473966362011-12-04T21:02:00.000-08:002011-12-04T21:17:49.729-08:00So now he gets it...<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-a2R90uu7KbU/TtxTpIwlbII/AAAAAAAAA4E/9mVLCgp_49k/s320/DSC03721.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682508796025728130" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pZKCgC6yAkg/TtxTo52rs9I/AAAAAAAAA38/m2h3NjP9X5I/s320/DSC_0059.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682508792024773586" />

It has been too long since my last post. I have been going to Blackies almost every weekend with my son. We hook up with VR and his son. It has been a good time. The boys are getting pretty stoked on surfing.
Our plan is to keep going evey weekend until summer. We hope by then that they will be good enough to paddle out and cath waves on their own. Once the can do that, we will get them off the Wavestorm Softtops.

I have to say, it has been great, it gets a little cold in the 4/3 standing in the water and pushing him into the waves, but it is worth every freezing moment.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4923982138259252371.post-11502420172209853192011-11-16T08:44:00.000-08:002011-11-16T08:48:21.347-08:00New Office Manager<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-icsBjT0Sfic/TsPpMM56XrI/AAAAAAAAA3w/d8nBJfmizNk/s320/DSC03655.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5675636351248785074" />
Things have been a little slow here at CUS(Clean Up Set). I know I only have a short window of time to spend with him where he will actually want to spend time with me, so I am taking advantage of that.

I volunteer in his class. Today for example, while the surf will be good and my friends will be out, I will be helping to teach a PE class at 1pm. I coach his Fall Baseball Team, take him to FNL football practice, pick him up from school every day, he got into fishing, so we fish; I take him to his batting coach. Then, I actually try and get some work done. I only seem to be able to work between 9:30 am and 2:30pm, then again at night after 7:30pm. As a Self-Employed Real Estate Appraiser in a shitty economy, I have to take work when it shows up. The first half of the year was the worst in the past 8 years, no orders and nothing but time, but I was on injured reserve, so no surfing. Now, I have so much work I am turning things down.

I am trying to balance stuff, but some thing has to drop down the list, and unfortunately that is surfing. Sure it bums me out, I enjoy surfing with my friends.

I’ll be out when you least expect it. I‘ll be the one that drops in on you, then blows it!

But for now it is different.

For now it is not about me…………….

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4923982138259252371.post-16637589423125409942011-10-09T19:58:00.000-07:002011-10-09T19:59:06.634-07:00Things Change..

Things change…

How true that is. I have not done a post in awhile, because I did not have much to say. Summer ended, and school started for my son. Things got back to a routine. I did my annual guys Trip, we call it TresFest, but now we go to San Elijo, so we call it San Elijo Fest. The surf was good, but I got sick right before it started, so for 3 days I was a walking zombie at the camp, all wacked out on antibiotics and Codeine.

So, fast forward. I was telling my son we should try surfing at Blackies in Newport. It’s a great spot I said, real fun you would like it, best of all, when we are done, we can get Hot Chocolate and Donuts! We can meet VR and his son too, what do you think? “Sure Dad sounds good.”(Bingo!)

So today we get up and head down there, and we could not have had better weather. A classic California Fall day, sunny, no wind, warm, just a great beach day. We get there and wait for VR and his son, watch the waves and the surfers. When I say surfers, I do mean ALL of them, the place was packed! I notice all kinds of kids with dads pushing them into the water, some kids on their own, old guys, young guys, girls, newbie’s, and kooks. But what I like best was the vibe, just all about fun.

Cole and Michael surfed, got off there boards and jumped in the waves, played and had a good time. He only surfed about twenty minutes, but then he was in the water playing too. To me it was all good; it all creates his awareness of the ocean, an understanding of waves and how they break. It all will add up to his surfing knowledge latter.

We got our donuts and hot chocolate, walked out on the pier to see what people were catching, and looked out at some fun waves on the south side.

He and Michael both asked me and VR, “Can we surf on the other side of the pier right now?”

Yes, things are beginning to change…….

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2
